6 Types of Self-Care

Let’s talk about self-care. It’s a word that’s thrown around and used a lot but what does it mean? One definition of self-care is “a conscious act one takes in order to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health” (Verywellmind, 2019).

There are several different categories/areas we can engage in self-care. Here are a few of them, along with a few ideas too:

1.     Psychological – be creative, meditate, keep a journal, be spiritual/pray

2.     Emotional – cry, laugh, be comfortable with different emotions, explore a new hobby

3.     Spiritual – Sing, practice forgiveness, do yoga, meditate, pray

4.     Personal – learn new skills, read books, set goals, practice existing skills

5.     Professional – set boundaries, learn to say no, take a break/vacation

6.     Physical – eat healthy, get a massage, exercise, buy healthy groceries

As you can see, there’s lots of overlap in activities you can do for self-care in each of these categories because many parts of our health are intertwined and connected. That means it’s important we take care of all areas so that other areas can benefit too! Take a look at the self-care wheel in this post and brainstorm what you can do to promote self-care for yourself in those categories.
