The Benefits of Family Therapy

Family counselling can be beneficial for people with existing healthy families, as well as families with problems. A study by Varghese et al. (2020) suggests that some things family counselling may most commonly be sought for are:

  • Families with marital problems

  • Families with conflicts between siblings

  • Maladaptive relationship dynamics

  • Adapting to major transitions or changes in life

  • Coping with a chronic illness or death in the family

  • Situations where one or more family members have difficulty communicating or expressing their emotions

  • Substance abuse or offending behaviours by one or more family members

There’s been a lot of research done on the benefits of family therapy. Some of the benefits research has identified are:

  • Resolving dysfunctional interaction patterns

  • Improving communication

  • Developing healthy boundaries

  • Improving familial problem solving abilities

  • Clarifying roles within the family

  • Improving overall family dynamics

  • Improving relationships within the family

  • Developing coping skills for the family
