Couple’s Counselling
Our couple’s counselling services involve one of our mental health practitioners working with you and your partner(s) in a safe, caring, and confidential environment.
Couple’s counselling can provide many benefits such as improving the quality of your relationship, fostering new healthier ways of communication, enhancing physical and emotional intimacy, improving trust in the relationship, reducing chances of present and future conflict, increasing appreciation amongst partners, developing a better understanding of each other, improving the overall family system and more.
A common misconception is that couple’s counselling is only for when something is going wrong in their relationship. In reality, every couple is unique, which means people seek couple’s therapy for a variety of reasons – including when things are going well. Some reasons you may want to access couple’s counselling services may be for pre-marital counselling, intimacy issues, relationship issues, family issues, family of origin issues, LGBTQ issues, children issues, parenting, family conflict, life transitions, attachment issues, addiction, anxiety, depression, stress & burnout; abandonment issues, neglect, and more.
What can you expect?
In the initial session (intake session), the mental health practitioner will discuss what you and your partner(s) can expect from treatment; likely benefits and risks of treatment; confidentiality; rights & responsibilities; telephone and emergency procedures; payment for services; cancellations and missed appointments; and any other questions either of you may have.
During this first session, the mental health practitioner will also work with both of you to understand your presenting concerns and goals for therapy. To assist with this, the mental health practitioner may use a variety of assessment tools to better understand you and your therapy needs.
After the first session, you and your mental health practitioner will discuss a counselling plan that works for you. There is no one-size-fits-all solution because every couple is unique. This means that the frequency, duration, and number of sessions will differ for everyone.
